“Girl Meets Polymer Clay” – Gabby Ackermann Of Sunshine Creative Tells Us Her Story

Gabby of Sunshine Creative HEYBOO

Meet Gabrielle Ackermann of Sunshine Creative – an avid polymer clay enthusiast who turned her hobby into an earring business.

We chatted to Gabby about her love for creating handmade things, what inspires her designs, what’s next for Sunshine Creative, and more… Let’s jump in!

Tell us about yourself and how you got into the earring business?

It was really a case of “girl meets polymer clay, girl falls in love with polymer clay, girl starts a polymer clay business to fund her obsession.”

I’ve always enjoyed being creative and creating things with my hands. Previously I used to work for a company that made wedding invites, and since then I’ve always made a little bit of jewellery and bits and bobs for friends as gifts. During Covid, I even sold beaded necklaces that you could hang your mask on. At one stage, a friend suggested I join her for a pottery class and with that, I discovered polymer clay and fell in love with it.

I first started making earrings for myself and a few friends and before I knew it I was creating new designs every day. What was a hobby, became a passion and is now an obsession. Sunshine Creative was born out of the desire to share the fruits of that passion.

What are some of the inspirations behind your designs?

I love creating one-of-a-kind designs, each one reflecting a different part of my personality. Sometimes I will make something funky and colourful and sometimes a little more subdued and elegant. It really is just based on my mood, but overall I just want them to put out a positive vibe.

Earrings are such a wonderful way to brighten up a girl’s look and bring character to an outfit. It is just a simple, playful, and positive thing a woman can do for herself each day. It lightens up one’s mood straight away when you put them on. This is why the brand is called Sunshine Creative, the earrings are like a small ray of sunshine that just goes that little way of brightening up your day.

If you had to choose three pieces from your collection, which are your favourite?

Currently, I’m a sucker for hearts, so Sol and Olwen are my favourites. I’m also in love with the colours on Sienna.

What’s next for Sunshine Creative?

More and more designs! I’m always looking to bring out new and exciting designs. Overall I’m just looking to showcase my designs to more and more people out there. There is a collab with some local fashion designers in the works, but we will have to wait and see where that goes. There may even be some Christmas theme designs coming out soon.

Do you have any advice for aspiring jewellery makers?

Yes, remember why you are making your jewellery. It’s a way to express yourself and showcase your personality. Let that shine through. Let it be a positive thing you are bringing to people.

Getting to know Gabby:

  • If I had to choose one person, alive or dead, as my inspiration, it would be… my sister. She started her own small business about 10 years ago and I really admire how successful she has made it. It is something that truly inspires me.
  • My favourite hobby is… jewellery making duh
  • My daily mantra is… Always do the right thing, and be happy with yourself and not with someone else. 💕 Be kind. Be proud. Be you.
